This is graphite on paper by John Whitten. In this picture, there is a man struggling to push black away. He is also in black and white. The feelings I get from this picture are sadness, longing, struggle, and frustration. The black looks like its trying to push the man out of the picture. I think that the black represents absence. Maybe he is trying to remember things, or maybe he doesn’t want to be alone. Or maybe he messed up his life before and had nothing, but is trying to push that away and create something for himself, but he is struggling along the way. I like the picture and the message it sends. It is inspiring.
